Azalea japonica
Japanese azalea
Japanese azalea is supplied in a range of varieties that differ mainly in flower colour. It forms a low, densely twiggy shrub with small leaves, and the flowers are set thickly over the whole crown. An acid, humus-rich soil and a position in half-shade suit it best.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
