Japanese barberry
Small yellow leaves cover a low, fine-twigged shrub that keeps part of its foliage into winter. The flowers are yellow and sit close to the shoots. Its scale suits rock gardens, low edging and pots, and it holds colour best out of deep shade.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
