Musa basjoo
Japanese banana
Pale yellow flowers appear in summer, followed by green-yellow fruit that is not worth eating. The plant is grown instead for its paddle-shaped leaves on a false stem reaching around 6 m, with a 5 m spread. Zone 9; shelter keeps the foliage from shredding.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
