Paeonia suffrutticosa (Arborea)
Tree peony
Tree peony makes a deciduous shrub with dark green, deeply cut leaves and woody stems that stand through winter. Single, cup-shaped flowers open at the end of spring. It resents disturbance, so plant it once, in deep soil with some shade at midday.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
