Red young shoots give this evergreen its strongest effect, standing clear above the light green mature leaves. Panicles of white flowers open in April and May. Like others in the genus it wants acid, moisture-retentive soil and shelter from cold wind.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
