Pinus pinaster (Marittima)

maritime pine

Rigid, grey-green needles are the mark of this pine, carried on stout shoots towards the ends of the branches. The crown is open, so light reaches whatever is planted beneath. A large conifer for warm, sandy ground near the coast.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
