Pinus pinea
umbrella pine
The stone pine is unmistakable in outline: a clear trunk carrying a wide, flat-topped crown like a parasol. The needles are a glossy green. It reaches 15-25 m, exceptionally 40 m, with a spread of 6-15 m, and is hardy to zone 7B.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
