Strelitzia reginae
Bird of paradise
Clumping evergreen with long-stalked, paddle-shaped leaves and orange flowers held in a beaked bract. Growth is slow, and a plant builds to around 2 m tall and 1.5-2 m wide over time. It needs warmth, and in cooler regions is kept in a large container under cover.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
