Corylus maxima 'Purpurea'
Purple leaf filbert
Red-purple leaves are held on stiffly upright stems, giving a solid block of dark colour through the growing season. Corylus maxima 'Purpurea' stays smaller than the common hazel at 3 to 4 metres tall and about 3 metres wide, which keeps it usable in ordinary garden borders.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
