Sophora japonica
Japanese pagoda tree
Broad-crowned tree of 10-15 m with a spread of 10-12 m, carrying pinnate leaves that turn yellow in autumn. The canopy is light and the shade it casts is thin, so planting can continue underneath. Tolerant of urban conditions and often used in squares and along streets.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
