Fagus sylvatica

European beech

Common beech develops a broad, densely branched crown, reaching 25-30 m in height and 20-30 m across in the open. The green summer foliage turns brown in autumn, and the species tolerates clipping well enough to be grown as a tall hedge. A long-lived tree for parks and large gardens; zone 5B.

About sizes
CLT is a container volume in litres, VRL the same in a decorative red container. M is a field-grown plant lifted with its root ball, MGR the same grown in isolation and wire-balled. RN is bare root, available in the dormant season. T is a full standard and POT a planter. Heights are given as a range in centimetres; trunk girth is the circumference measured at one metre. A larger container is not always dearer: a trained or grafted form of the same volume costs more than a bush, and the form is named on the row.
